Niigata machine tools started business as Nigata Engineering in Japan in 1895. In its first major contract it sold 50 lathes to the national army. By the 1961 it was firmly routed as a company to watch and produced the First NC numerically controlled universal machining centre in the world, and later in 1976 produced the first unmanned machining center in the world. Though Niigata machine tool interests are only part of the company's activities, its all that will be mentioned here.
