The original incarnation of Charmilles was in 1861 in Geneva Switzerland, in which is was later to be known as Ateliers des Charmilles when it started manufacturing cars at the early stages of the 20th century. In 1983 Charmilles built and presented it's first EDM machine to the world. In 1983 the GF group aquired the Machine Tools arm of Ateliers des Charmilles, establishing it as Charmilles Technologies SA. In 1995 Charmilles and Agie at the time seperate organisations, in a joint venture created the Beijing Agie Charmilles Electronics Group. Which lead to the consolodation by George Fischer group to create in 1996: Agie Charmilles.
